RUDE

I love New York City...I really do. The big apple, the city that never sleeps, its really all true. But there is something that I've noticed recenlty and it makes me hoppin' mad on almost a daily basis.

There's been much talk about whether or not New Yorkers are rude, and for the most part, I don't think they are...except for in one very specific area: the subway.

Finding a seat on subway during rush hour is akin to snagging front row seats at a Radiohead concert. It's hot out now, and I'm tired too at 6pm when I'm commuting home with all of you other chumps, but if I see a pregnant woman or an older woman standing, I give up my seat! Immediately! It's not even a thought.

I can't tell you how infuriating it is to me that, almost on a daily basis, I see rows of virile, athletic, strapping young men comfortably seated while sweet grandmas or women with child are left standing. It makes me SO mad! Today I stood next to someone's grandma as, count them, 6 guys in the immediate vicinity confortably sat there listening to their ipods or reading their papers.

I was contemplating saying out loud to none of them in particular, "ARE YOU KIDDING ME? ARE YOU ALL REALLY THAT LAME!?," but of course I said nothing. I'm really not an old fashioned girl for the most part, but come on people...right is right.

Common courtesy (like common sense) just isn't that common these days...sadly.

i hear you! i think chivalry is dead, unfortunately. it seems like everyone is more worried about what they're gonna get, all about thinking they deserve something just for showing up. :) but hey, i'm not bitter. ha!

I will say that someone (a girl my age) offered me her seat (I'm pregnant) when we were up there for NSS. I was fine standing, but was glad to see that she offered.

I know I'm commenting on an old post but I had to add my twopenneth to the pile. Firstly let me say I am English, and to me good manners are an essential part of what life is all about, however the number of rude people I encounter on public transport never ceases to amaze me! The gum chewing yahoo class of person who sit on the outer seat so that no-one can sit next to them, or the young people who ignore frail elderly people, pregnant ladies and anyone else that obviously could do with having a bit of a sit down. OOOOHHHHH it makes me so cross, and I don't like being cross about such things. I'm only 29 I shouldn't have to shout things like "excuse me young man, I think this gentleman would benefit from a seat more than you" and "honestly the younger generation these days"!! PEOPLE, people, people, get yourselves some manners - THEY DON'T COST ANYTHING!
